Babies on the move - Cerny's career, too
It all started five years ago when David Cerny lent ten "Tower Babies" to developer Michael Braun in Palm Springs for an art installation in a construction site across from the Palm Springs Art Museum. When we met, Cerny was already the most famous (and infamous) artist of the Czech Republic, but now things are starting to move on the North American continent.
A Los Angeles-based developer acquired one of Cerny's landmark sculptures and we are awaiting a date for the unveiling in Santa Monica. The important federal Mexican museum CECUT is giving Cerny a major solo show and several large projects are in the making.
In Prague, Cerny just received the immense honor of a museum dedicated solely to his art. A 5-story building to celebrate his achievements in art, engineering, architecture, and more. Cerny, who is a street artist and rebel at heart was, of course, uncomfortable with the idea of having such an established presence and asked to call the building "Musoleum", a play on the words mausoleum (tomb, grave) and museum, because "only dead artists should have such a shrine."
